Welcome for international students

Forty-five new international students representing 35 countries will be officially welcomed to La Trobe University tomorrow.

multicultural-students-TO‘With applications still coming in, we are holding our own in terms of international student numbers on this campus,’ said Senior International Development Manager (Regional), Lisa Farrar.

Ms Farrar said that the numbers of international students will increase again with the intake of students undertaking short courses such as the International Registration of Overseas Nurses (IRON).

‘We are delighted that our numbers are above our average of 40 new international students each year.  In addition, we will have 80 students in 2012 doing the IRON program. The first cohort are going through now with the second cohort coming in May,’ said Ms Farrar.

Ms Farrar said that when this figure is added to continuing international students, the University will host well over 200 international higher education students in Bendigo in 2012.

International student applications are up for La Trobe University’s regional campuses overall and there are international students at all campuses in 2012.

The welcome day for international students will commence tomorrow with a get-to-know-you and essential information session over a French breakfast, followed by a series of workshops, library tours and sessions on student enrichment programs.

A fun session on Australiana will help familiarise students with local customs and a local police officer will present a session on safety before they are taken on a bus tour around Bendigo.

Counties represented in this year’s international cohort are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brazil, Burma, Cambodia, Canada, China, Egypt, Finland, France, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Iraq, South Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Nepal, Norway, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Thailand, UK, USA, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe.
