Project hope to grant one child a wish

Leadership Program students
A group of La Trobe University students are banding together to raise funds for the Starlight Children’s Foundation. Together they have organised the ‘Wish Upon a Star’ charity night, to be held at the Preston Stolberg Beer Cafe Friday 14 September.

Leadership Program studentsAs part of the ‘Leadership in Action’ component of the La Trobe’s Infinity Leadership Program, participating students formed a group to support the community project.

‘Initially we all wanted to support a children's charity. But one of the project members has been a volunteer at the Starlight Foundation in Sydney for 10 years now and suggested them,’ says La Trobe student Meryl Lai Kong Ling.

‘After some individual research about the work of the Starlight Foundation we all agreed that it would be an amazing charity to fundraise for.
‘We are hoping to raise enough funds to cover the costs of granting one child a wish. It costs up to $6000 for a wish to be granted.’
The Infinity Leadership Program at La Trobe University brings together like-minded individuals who have held leadership roles or have participated in community projects such as fundraising events and volunteering.
Applications are accepted annually from students and recent graduates, across all La Trobe University campuses.

The program provides an opportunity for participants to utilise and develop their knowledge of leadership and to extend their skills and experiences by putting leadership into practice.

It also gives more opportunities for students to engage with La Trobe alumni and industry and community leaders.
‘As part of the Leadership Program, we have been able to meet and hear from amazing speakers and also learn a lot about leadership skills while developing our community project.
‘This experience has been valuable especially for meeting new people and developing our personal and professional networks,’ says Meryl Lai Kong Ling.
