John Dewar starts as Vice-Chancellor

john-dewar-2Professor Dewar joined the Australian higher education sector 15 years ago from Oxford University and has since held senior positions at Griffith University and, most recently, as Provost at the University of Melbourne.

La Trobe University Chancellor, Adrienne E Clarke AC, welcomed Professor Dewar to the University and said the University Council is delighted he will be leading La Trobe.

‘Professor Dewar joins the University at a time of critical change and challenge in the Australian higher education system. His leadership will build on the foundations established by the former Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Johnson, which has included revitalising the Bundoora and Bendigo campuses and identifying the University’s strategic priorities,’ Professor Clarke said.

Professor Dewar will lead the University through its next phase of development, as the University continues to strengthen its appeal to students and build research excellence.

‘I am a passionate believer in the transformative power of education and higher education in particular,’ said Professor Dewar.

‘A key part of La Trobe’s mission is to reach out to communities that traditionally have not been able to participate in higher education. This is an important goal in itself, and a powerful personal motivator for me.

‘Universities enrich their communities by opening doors and encouraging people from different backgrounds onto campus to take up educational, cultural and sporting opportunities. We can integrate our activity into the lives of the broader public and serve our community in more creative ways.

‘One of La Trobe’s greatest assets is the contribution it makes to regional Victoria. I look forward to engaging with staff and students and key community groups in Bundoora and throughout our regional campuses in coming weeks and months,’ said Professor Dewar.

Professor Dewar is an internationally-known family law specialist and researcher. He is a graduate of the University of Oxford, where he was also a Fellow of Hertford College.
