Business, Economics and Law now third

Research CentreThe release of last week’s Excellence in Research Australia (ERA) rankings demonstrates real progress for La Trobe’s research across Business, Economics and Law. All key areas of research are now ‘at world standard’, placing La Trobe clear third in Victoria, just behind Melbourne and Monash Universities.

The ERA results represent a solid growth across all areas of Business, Economics and Law since the 2010 outcome, with La Trobe once again placing first in Victoria for its research in Tourism, and second for its research into Banking, Finance and Investment.

‘In respect of the recent Faculty restructure, we now have all of our 3 disciplines areas rated at world standard at the broad (2 digit Field of Research (FOR)) level.  We have also made considerable progress in respect of our strategic commitment to ultimately have all our more narrowly defined discipline areas (4 digit FoRs) rated at world standard or above, with an additional four areas now rated at world standard.  This is an excellent outcome for the Faculty’ said Executive Dean of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law, Professor Leigh Drake.

The results align with La Trobe’s vision to reclaim its clear third place in Victoria as a research and teaching university.
‘Through Future Ready, we are aiming to regain our place as one of the top three universities in Victoria, one of the top 12 in Australia, and one of the top 300 internationally. The 2012 ERA results show that we are already well on the way’ announced Vice Chancellor, Professor John Dewar, to university staff.

‘The result reflects the shift in research efforts of many staff to publish in higher quality journals in recent years. It is also heartening that almost all of our assessable research across the Faculty has been rated at world standard, one of the key aims of our Faculty strategic plans.’ acknowledged Associate Dean (Research), Professor Russell Hoye.
