Bendigo to plug into world congress

YLTW-standardYouth Leading the World (YLTW) is a three day participatory youth congress which is being conducted simultaneously in 50 locations across the globe via the web.

YLTW is an initiative of OzGREEN, an Australian-based organisation that aims to accelerate the shift to sustainable ideas by informing, inspiring and involving youth and communities around the country.

Chris Rowlands, a second year Bachelor of Urban, Rural and Environmental Planning student at La Trobe University Bendigo, is bringing the program to Bendigo for the first time, with the help of two fellow students and a La Trobe graduate from Castlemaine.

‘YLTW is about building a movement of inspired leaders to deal with issues that will affect us for the next 100 years and beyond. We can’t afford to bury our heads in the sand any longer. Our generation has an opportunity to act now,’ said Mr Rowlands.

‘But it is harder to act if we are not educating ourselves and making positive changes. This congress is not just about educating people about climate change and other big issues affecting the environment. It inspires and empowers participants to create an action plan so that they can accomplish real things in their local communities.’

Mr Rowlands began his association with YLTW in 2010 as a high school student in Swan Hill and says that he is excited about being able to bring it to his adopted city.

‘We are especially interested in working with students in years 7, 8 and 9 and would love to hear from interested principals and teachers. However, the congress is equally interesting for older high school, TAFE and university students who want to learn about the big issues and help create fairer futures.’
