Bendigo represented in 'olympics'

As the Australian Olympics team returns to Australia, three La Trobe University pharmacy students will represent Bendigo their own ‘Olympics’ event in an international physiology quiz at the University of Malaya in Malaysia.

LucyJankiRuth-standardJanki Solanki, Ruth Colley and Lucy Hodgson will be vying for the Professor A Raman Challenge Trophy when they compete against more than 70 teams from across the globe in the two-day 10th Inter-Medical School Physiology Quiz on 29 and 30 August.

It’s the first time that students from La Trobe have participated in this event and Dr Michael Angove, Head of Department, Pharmacy, says that the experience will make a valuable contribution to their education.

‘Janki, Ruth and Lucy met the eligibility criteria for the quiz through the subjects they are studying’ said Dr Angove.

‘Taking part in the quiz will enrich their understanding of how students from different cultures and countries are taught. It will also demonstrate the rich course content that our pharmacy students enjoy in Bendigo.’

Ms Solanki said she and her team mates are excited about visiting Malaysia and are looking forward to the challenge of testing their physiology knowledge and skills.

‘We are interested because it is great opportunity to test and compare our knowledge base with students from other disciplines and cultures’ said Ms Solanki.

‘Pharmacy training involves a lot of medical science such as physiology and not everybody realises that. If we attend these sorts of events, it will help promote the view that pharmacists are more than just people who work in shops – they have a strong science and medical background knowledge.’
