World Social Work Day celebrations
The La Trobe University’s Rural Health School, Social Work and Social Policy Department at Albury-Wodonga will celebrate ‘World Social Work Day’ with a Field Education Expo Tuesday 15 March from 12-4pm.
Social work is a profession that promotes human rights, social justice and the empowerment of people to enhance wellbeing. Roles within the field include casework, counseling and clinical interventions with individuals, families, groups and communities.
‘The Albury-Wodonga campus successfully placed over 40 social work students in various placements last year. The Expo is a great opportunity for students to engage with professionals in the field, collect information, ask questions and discover more about the agencies where they might get experience’, says Dr Guinever Threlkeld, Acting Deputy Head of the La Trobe Rural Health School.
‘It is only through the commitment and support provided by local health, welfare and community organizations that we are able to offer such a high quality field education program,’ says Dr Threlkeld.
Students in their third and final year of the Social Work Program undertake 70 work days of field placement which provides first-hand experience in their areas of interest and builds a professional identity. The Expo is an important opportunity to expose students to the social work profession and potential opportunities for placements.
‘Quality social work education relies on students being able to experience social work roles, responsibilities and interventions in a supportive work setting. It is through working in partnership with local services that we are able to produce high quality graduates who go on to meet the expanding needs of the local health and human service workforce,’ says Dr Threlkeld.
Guest speaker at the event will be Dr Judith Gibbs, a social worker with extensive experience in child protective practice in both England and Australia. Dr Gibbs, a regular contributor to the course, will address the value of reflective supervision in Social Work.
