Top 100 articles list nears completion

In collaboration with students from La Trobe University’s Bachelor of Journalism and Master of Global Communications courses, upstart  ( has been building a list of 100 articles that every journalist should read about journalism.

upstart2-stdThis project was initiated by journalism coordinator at La Trobe University, Dr Lawrie Zion in 2009.

‘The list is not just written by students. In keeping with the spirit of the era of participatory media, this list is also generated as part of a conversation, and not simply delivered as some immutable verdict,’ says Dr Zion, Associate Professor and editor-in-chief of upstart.

On Tuesday 11 October the ‘100 articles every journalist should read about journalism’ project will be completed and listed on upstart, the site for emerging journalists. You can see the list so far at

Journalists from around the world have also contributed to the project, which has attracted attention all over the globe.

upstart is an online magazine for emerging journalists that was founded by La Trobe’s Journalism program in mid-2009. Since then it has built up a strong presence through social media, attracting nearly 2,800 followers on Twitter (@upstartmagazine). The site publishes new material every weekday.

’In two years upstart has become the centrepiece of our Journalism program,’ says Lawrie Zion. ‘It’s integrated into the curriculum, and each semester around 10 students work on its editorial team for academic credit. One of our third-year students, Ben Waterworth, has published more than 100 articles on the site and he – like many other contributors – is gaining paid work as a journalist ahead of his graduation.’

Former upstart editors include Tom Cowie who went on to work at Crikey and now the Power Index, and Matt De Neef who now works at The Conversation.
