The Trobers AFL grand final

The La Trobe University Australia Football League team the ‘Trobers’, has made it to the North West Conference Grand Final on Sunday 14 August, after beating the Bendigo Thunder by 20 points in a hotly contested game and great team effort!

AFLThe Trobers, who are a part of the Victorian Womens Football League (VWFL), with 31 teams in total including 7 teams in the North West, will be meeting North Ballarat Eagles at the Coburg City Oval on Harding Street this Sunday. The bounce is at 12 noon.

This is the first Grand Final appearance for the La Trobe University AFL women’s team after just missing in the preliminary final last year. The North Ballarat Eagles finished the season on top of the ladder this year, but La Trobe is the only team to have beaten them already this season. The Trobers also beat them in a thrilling elimination final last year.

Over a thousand people are expected to attend the match and Media Manager for the VWFL Leesa Catto says, ‘I just had a talk to John Marshall, coach for North Ballarat, and he told me that it will be hard to match the La Trobe Team. I think it will be close, but La Trobe has got every chance to win.’

Trobers player and manager Jess Smith says she is excited about her team appearing in their first Grand Final. ‘The outcome of this Sunday’s Grand Final is anyone's guess as both teams very evenly matched,’ she says.

Captain Hannah Kennedy dislocated her finger in last week’s game against Bendigo, but bravely played on to win the game and secure a place in Sunday’s showdown.

She says her finger is a bit sore and purple, but she will be strapped up and ready for the Grand Final.

’We prepare a final as for any other game, training twice a week. The girls are really looking forward to the Final and despite being a bit of an underdog, I think our chances are good to win,’ says Captain Kennedy.

The whole La Trobe University community wishes the La Trobe University Trobers good luck for a great game on Sunday!
