The Body: Whole and Pieces (art exhibition)

The Body: Whole and Pieces (art exhibition)

10 Mar 2011

Master of Visual Arts by Research candidate Neil Matterson presents an exhibition of paintings, drawings and prints that examine our fears and apprehension relating to aging and mortality of the human body.

Self Portrait Detail on Canvas (2010) by Neil MattersonArtists’ statement:

The human body, whole and in pieces, has for centuries presented intrigue for those examining it and for the owners of the bodies themselves.
The exhibition works, consisting of charcoal on paper and oil on canvas, looks at the fears and apprehensions, including my own, we feel towards the body in relation to our aging and ultimately our mortality.

While it is not feasible for us to know our bodies with anatomical precision, the work sets out to remind us not to take our core internal grotesqueness for granted and not to defer totally to the secrecy and ownership of the body by the medical profession and the shame and embarrassment imbued by the civilising processes. While medical and scientific technology sets out to bypass the natural cycles of our lives, is it time to acknowledge our naturally aging bodies and celebrate the last generation of the natural human form?
