Team La Trobe goes Around the Bay

This year’s Around the Bay in a Day will feature a new addition to the riding line-up with Team La Trobe representing La Trobe University in raising money for The Smith Family.

Image of Team La TrobeOn Sunday 16 October thousands of cyclists from over eight-hundred teams will take to the roads and participate in a ride from Melbourne’s Alexandra Gardens to Queenscliff and Sorrento and back.

The charity event raises money for The Smith Family’s Learning for Life Programs, and this year will be the first time La Trobe University has been represented, with staff and students taking to their bikes with the goal of reaching over $5,000 in donations.

With their specially-designed team jerseys, Team La Trobe is training hard and looking forward to reaching their individual goals.

‘We are looking forward to riding Around the Bay in a Day to support The Smith Family – a cause that many staff and students at the university are passionate about,’ says Team La Trobe captain Jason Murphy.

‘Our team of 25 strong is a first for La Trobe, and we look forward to participating in many future cycling events in the community.’

The Smith Family is a national, independent children's charity, to help disadvantaged Australian kids get the most out of their education and create better futures.

The event hopes to raise 1.2 million dollars for the charity and Murphy is proud to lead the team in adding to that goal.

‘The team is grateful for the already generous support of staff and friends who have so far contributed over $4000,’ says Mr. Murphy, who invites members of the community to support Team La Trobe via their fundraising page.

In the last year The Smith Family reached more than 126,000 disadvantaged children and families across Australia, Around the Bay in a Day helps make their work possible.
