Raising the profile of science and maths

11 May 2011

The Hon Martin Dixon MP the State Minister for Education will formally launch La Trobe University’s partnerships with the Charles La Trobe College and Quantum Victoria on 11 May 2011.

maths_stdVice-Chancellor of La Trobe University, Professor Paul Johnson, says the partnerships will benefit all parties, providing major opportunities for resource exchange, staff and student exchange, collaborative research, curriculum design and development as well as teacher training and professional development.

This initiative aims to increase the profile of science and mathematics teaching and learning and attract more students to study the subjects.

‘While a key objective of the partnerships is to build aspirations for students to continue to focus on maths and science in their senior years of schooling,

they will also offer significant ongoing research opportunities around curriculum, teaching and learning approaches, new learning technologies and teacher practicums’ Professor Johnson says.

The College will host Quantum Victoria, one of Victoria’s three Specialist Science and Maths Centres, which will form a State-wide network of centres, each with their own area of specialisation.
