Official welcome for new students

21 Feb 2011

City of Greater Bendigo Mayor, Councillor Rod Fyffe will host a civic reception to officially welcome more than 1400 new commencing undergraduate students as they enter a new phase in their lives.

Rod Fyff speaking to students at the Civic WelcomeLa Trobe University’s executive director, Bendigo campus, Andrew Skewes, said the aim of the event is to welcome new students and encourage them to embrace community life in Bendigo, both on and off campus.

‘Nearly sixty per cent of our students come from locations other than Bendigo and this is a wonderful way to introduce them to our city,’ said Mr Skewes.

‘The civic welcome acknowledges the close relationship between La Trobe University and the City of Greater Bendigo and demonstrates to our students that they are valued members of the community,’ Mr Skewes said.
Mr Skewes said that a 2009 report shows that University staff and students contribute $201.4 million a year to Bendigo’s gross regional product.

‘The University community makes a significant contribution to Bendigo’s economy and to the cultural and social life of the city,’ said Mr Skewes.

The civic reception on Monday 21 February commences at 6.30 pm and will be followed by entertainment and a free dinner in the Town Hall gardens at around 7.15pm. Entertainment and dinner are provided by the Bendigo Students Association.

The welcome is the first event on the O Week program, which runs until Thursday 24 February. A range of information sessions, social events and campus tours will give a taste of student life at the campus and in Bendigo.
