Leader in Biochemistry and Cell Biology
Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) findings released today confirm La Trobe as the leading university in Australia in Biochemistry and Cell Biology. La Trobe was the only university where the Government rated research in this specific field as well above world standard. Further, Biological Sciences overall was similarly rated, attaining the maximum possible score of 5.
‘This is excellent news as it confirms our investment strategy is travelling well and that our reputation for creating valuable research outcomes is being enhanced,’ said Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tim Brown.
La Trobe University is now in the midst of the biggest transformation in its history with the building of the $94 million La Trobe Institute of Molecular Science (LIMS) and $288 million Agribio, the Centre for Agribiosciences at the Melbourne campus.
As well, Condensed Matter Physics and Human Movement and Sports Science were rated at the maximum possible 5.
There was also a strong performance in the humanities field with above world standard (a 4 rating) attained in the broad fields of history and archaeology and language, communication and culture.
‘The overarching goal at La Trobe is to produce research that has positive and lasting impacts on society at all levels, and with that aim in mind we use the scarce resources at our disposal very carefully,’ said Professor Brown.
‘These results are very helpful as the will assist us in further refining our research strategy towards building critical mass in areas of excellence. Fifty-nine percent of our results in specific fields were at or above world standard. Careful attention will ensure that these are maintained and others improved,’ he added.
