La Trobe wins Southern University Games – again

La Trobe University for the second year in a row has won the Southern University Games which concluded in Geelong late this week.

La Trobe University team managers Rennie Cirillo and Bec Ogilvie with Sharon Cockerell from the City of Greater GeelongWith five teams tying for gold medals, La Trobe was awarded the overall champion’s John Campbell Trophy after a count-back of silver and bronze.

A team of 250 students from the Melbourne, Bendigo and Shepparton campuses competed in ten sports. 

La Trobe won four gold medals – in cross country running, men’s tennis, mixed netball and women’s netball – six silver, and five bronze medals.  

La Trobe strongest wins were in the highly competitive sport of netball. 

Sport Manager, John Dumaresq, said the University’s Netball Club has gone from strength to strength under the presidency of Teigan Redwood, with the Club now boasting more than 500 members. 

‘Team manager Ashlyn Hare will have some tough decisions to make to select one team to represent La Trobe at the Australian University Games on the Gold Coast in September,’ Mr Dumaresq said.

After taking last year’s honours in their home town of Bendigo, La Trobe did not come into these Games as favourites.

Team Managers, Rennie Cirillo and Rebecca Ogilvie said they were very proud of the team’s achievement, the result of many hours of work on their behalf and that of each of the individual team managers.
