La Trobe University and Bendigo Senior Secondary College have taken an important step towards increasing the aspirations of students to engage in tertiary education.

MOU_stdProfessor Lorraine Ling, La Trobe University’s Dean, Faculty of Education and Director (Educational Engagement) said the University is dedicated to continually enhancing its relations with schools across the region.

‘Our aim is to take every opportunity to further develop our existing strong links with the local community so that we develop vibrant and innovative regional communities through improved opportunities for access to higher education,’ said Professor Ling.

‘The Memorandum of Understanding is the first important step in what we hope will facilitate the development of flexible, long-term relationships with BSSC culminating in a Partnership Agreement,’ Professor Ling said.

Professor Ling said that La Trobe University is working closely with other schools and educational institutions to develop similar partnership agreements for the mutual benefit of all partners.

Executive Director of La Trobe University’s Bendigo Campus, Andrew Skewes, is delighted that an agreement between the University and BSSC has been reached.

‘The MOU demonstrates our commitment to doing everything we can to ensure that the pathway for students who wish to progress to tertiary level education after they finish high school is smooth,’ Mr Skewes said.

‘La Trobe University and BSSC have a history of collaboration across a wide range of activities and events and the MOU will provide a more formalised and coordinated approach to our partnership,’ he said.

‘Higher education serves to strengthen the economy of our region as tertiary education leads to higher pay rates and higher levels of general wellbeing,’ Mr Skewes said.

BSSC Principal, Dale Pearce said the MOU will build on the existing collaborative relationship between the college and La Trobe.

‘The College and the University currently collaborate in a range of areas and this MOU will provide a platform for expansion of those activities. La Trobe is increasingly becoming the university of choice for students from this region and we are excited about the opportunities we can create for our students through this partnership’ said Mr Pearce.

Ron Lake, Regional Director of Education applauds the initiative. ‘The strong partnership between these two quality organisations will benefit students. BSSC is the most significant school in VCE provision in the region and La Trobe University is the most significant tertiary presence.  Together they provide for thousands of young people, and are the cornerstones of educational opportunities for students in this region’ he said.
