International students get a local taste

31 Mar 2011

Last weekend marked the end of La Trobe University Albury-Wodonga’s Welcome Festival for International students. Eight students from Vietnam, Bangladesh, China, Japan and Canada celebrated their new semester with an Aussie style pub meal.

International studentsGathering at the Biralee Tavern in Wodonga, students shared stories and discussed international travel, cultural experiences, and future activities. Among the group was Vietnamese student, Duc Toan Truong, who just arrived to commence his PhD on water management.

‘We exchanged e-mails and mobile numbers in order to keep in contact, which is good for networking and staying up to date with other people’s studies,’ Toan says.

Along with the final dinner, international students have enjoyed campus tours, morning teas and orientations in order to become familiar with the campus and Australian culture. The events not only benefit overseas students but also the La Trobe community says Campus Director, Professor Lin Crase.
‘International students form a critical part of the activities of the campus.

The mere presence of international students on campus, even in small numbers, enables local students to gain a more diverse set of experiences, certainly beyond that which can be experiences passively though an on-line environment,’ he says.

Also at the dinner was Bangladesh student, Saiful Islam, who has been at the Albury-Wodonga campus since the middle of 2010. He says that the university has been welcoming since he began studying a Bachelor of Accounting.

‘Lecturers, tutors and staff have been very supportive and helpful since I’ve been here; it’s a very easy going place. Meeting other international students at the dinner showed me that we are all having a similar experience,’ Saiful says.
