Climate change: science, society and us

Award winning climate scientist Dr Graeme Pearman will be presenting the first of the three lectures at La Trobe University’s Melbourne campus on ‘Climate change: science, society and us’.

Dr Graeme PearmanDr Pearman’s presentation will focus on the key potential threats of on-going climate change.  He will discuss how change is a result of human activities that are causing gases as carbons dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide to increase in the atmosphere and what future risks are involved.

As a trained biologist Dr Pearman joined CSIRO in 1971 and became Chief of Atmospheric Research in 1992.  He then left CSIRO in 2004 to run his own company consulting for both the private and public sectors.  Dr Pearman has been presented with numerous awards over the years including the CSIRO medal, a United Nations Environment Program Global 500 award and has contributed to 150 scientific journals on aspects of the global carbon budget.  
Dr Pearman has also been elected as a research fellow to prestigious academies and societies including the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.  He has also been a science adviser to the Honourable Al Gore during his visit to Australia in 2006.

These lectures are presented live and broadcast via video link on three of La Trobe University’s campuses including: Albury-Wodonga, Bendigo and Melbourne.

The Climate, Sustainability and Society lectures

The Climate, Sustainability and Society event is a series of public lectures presented by leading thinkers who represent a range of approaches to issues of sustainability and climate change each year.  The lecture series supports a multidisciplinary subject offered to undergraduate students on three campuses of La Trobe University. Three prominent speakers will draw on science, social science and economic perspectives to address the issues surrounding climate change and sustainability. The University invites the public to join staff and students at the Melbourne, Bendigo and Albury-Wodonga campuses as they embrace the challenges of the future.
