HARBIN, China: La Trobe University and Harbin Medical University today celebrated ten years of cooperation in joint teaching with the graduation of 180 students who have successfully completed their studies in the renowned China Health Program.

China-wall-std‘I am delighted to welcome the 2011 graduates of the China Health Program into the La Trobe University alumni family,’ said Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Rosenberg.

‘Since our highly-acclaimed Program was established in 1996 and joint teaching commenced in 2001, over 1000 health alumni have graduated and are working in almost every province in China making an important contribution to the evolving development of the country’s health system.

‘Our graduates contribute to Chinese health practices by engaging in health policy research, improved management competency and adopting new ideas and innovations,’ said Professor Rosenberg.

The program has also been highly praised by Australia’s official University Quality Agency (AUQA). In their 2010 report they commended La Trobe University for the successful partnership with Harbin Medical University as “an exemplar for other University partnerships”.

Research based curriculum and teaching is one of the important features of the Program as it is based on extensive research into the training needs of health care managers in China and consultations with academics from all over the country.

The China Health Program collaborates on forums, joint research and policy development with many of the country’s leading medical institutions, including Harbin Medical University, Peking University, Sichuan University, Nanjing University, Tianjin Medical University and Kunming Medical College.

‘This is an innovative model of collaboration that adapts internationally recognised health management training to the specific context of China, which has also opened a new pathway to the outside world for the tertiary education sector,’ said Harbin Medical University President Yang Bofeng.

The graduation ceremony for the China Health Program was held at the Harbin Medical University campus in Harbin. The 180 graduates were accompanied by hundreds of family, friends and well-wishers.

La Trobe University’s main Australian campus is located in Bundoora in Melbourne’s north.  It is a multi-campus institution with major educational facilities in northern Victoria at Bendigo, Albury-Wodonga, Mildura and Shepparton plus a Melbourne city campus. In 2010, there were over 32,000 students and 2500 staff.
