Call for student accommodation

La Trobe University is calling on members of the Bendigo community to consider offering accommodation for first year students from around regional Victoria who have not been able to secure a place on campus.

Andrew Skewes, Executive Director, Bendigo Campus, said that growing demand for places at the University’s Bendigo campus from students across North Central Victoria has led to a shortage of student accommodation.
‘We would like to be able to offer university provided accommodation to all first year students but, due to growing demand from students wishing to study in Bendigo, we currently have insufficient places on campus,’ said Mr Skewes.

Although construction of a new 200-bed student accommodation facility is underway, another 200 beds would enable La Trobe Bendigo to meet demand.

Mr Skewes said that the Bendigo Student Association runs a free service on their website to assist Bendigo students seeking accommodation.

‘I invite agents, house owners or residents with rooms for rent to advertise on the BSA website for prospective tenants and boarders. This free service is a great way for the community to get to the students who are continuing to look for accommodation, and may be a simple means for many to help pay the mortgage,’ Mr Skewes said.

Bendigo students looking for accommodation off campus are advised to check the Marketplace section of the Bendigo Student Association, which features daily listings for rental properties, share households and private board available in the Bendigo area. Students can also list an advertisement for Accommodation Wanted or follow a link to a local real estate agent.

The free service is available at Interested community members with available accommodation can visit the website or call Business and Student Support Manager, Brad Russell on 03 5444 7976.
