Bombers tested on top equipment

The Bendigo Bombers have benefitted from a $200,000 major upgrade of the exercise physiology and fitness testing facilities at La Trobe University.

JumpingLa Trobe University physical education senior lecturer, John McCullagh said the new equipment, which is the same as that used by the Victorian Institute of Sport, will benefit students and the community.

‘We are now able to provide athletes in central and northern Victoria with a sophisticated level of testing that they would previously have needed to travel to Melbourne to access, Dr McCullagh said.

‘The equipment will also add significantly to the prestige of the course as well as providing students with access to the best testing facility available.’

Dr McCullagh said he and two final year students, Pat Van Dyk and Tom Hartney, put the Melbourne and Bendigo based players through a series of physical tests to help prepare them for the 2011 season.

‘The tests included the AFL agility run, 5, 10 and 20 metre sprints, reaction time cuts, repeat sprints, standing vertical jump, balance, flexibility and strength tests,’ Dr McCullagh said.

Many of the tests are currently being used by AFL clubs and at the AFL Draft Combine. The tests are specific to Australian Rules football and provide coaches and players with an enormous amount of data to enable assessment of strengths and weaknesses.

Individual player programs can be developed on the basis of results and training programs can be evaluated with further testing.

La Trobe University has also joined forces with the Australian Sports Commission to become accredited as a testing centre for the National Talent Identification and Development (NTID) program. One hundred students from schools in the Bendigo and Shepparton region have been tested during 2010 and several have been identified to progress to the next stage of testing.

‘We are looking forward to developing our programs further in 2011,’ Dr McCullagh said.
