Awards night a great success

Awards night a great success

06 Jun 2011

The Annual Presentation of Prizes and Scholarships for La Trobe University Albury-Wodonga campus was held in the Main Lecture Theatre at the Wodonga campus on Thursday 2nd June 2011, commencing at 6.00pm.

PeopleClose to fifty students received awards and scholarships related to both campus and faculty achievements, supported by proud friends and family.

Many of the awards and scholarships are sponsored by local industry and organisations, including memorial prizes such as the Lisa Malone Scholarship, the Andrea Hore Business Scholarship, the Hamilton Smith Rotary Scholarship, the Kerry Faul Memorial Prize and the Trent Jones Memorial Prize.

This year, the Fleur Connell Memorial Prize, honouring the memory and achievements of Fleur Connell, who completed her Bachelor of Psychological Science at the campus, was awarded for the first time.

“Fleur was a young and enthusiastic student who developed cancer during her studies at La Trobe and passed away in 2002. Despite the impact of illness on her studies, Fleur completed her degree in 2001. The recipient of this prize will have shown the type of determination that the School of Psychology remembers and honours in Fleur's life,” stated Dr Michael Halloran, Head of Psychology Section in Albury-Wodonga.

Of particular note are the achievements of Jennifer Podesta, Glenn Burr and Maureen Lescun, who have won multiple campus and faculty awards.

"All students are to be congratulated for their fine academic and community achievements. It is especially significant that many of the awards and scholarships are a direct result of increasing support from local institutions and business organisations. The University values its engagement with its communities highly and the strategic partnerships with its local and regional organisations.  These partnerships not only support students, they also make the programs of study more rewarding and relevant, which ultimately makes for stronger regional communities," stated Professor Lin Crase, Executive Director, Albury-Wodonga campus.
