Aust and Sri Lanka agreement world first
An agreement between La Trobe University and the University of Moratuwa in Sri Lanka heralds the introduction of a degree that is the first of its kind.
La Trobe University’s Associate Professor in Community Planning and Development and head of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Bendigo, Trevor Budge has organised the La Trobe accreditation process for the new postgraduate Masters in Spatial Planning, Management and Design course.
‘The Masters in Spatial Planning, Management and Design is the only accredited planning program a student can undertake in Australia which is jointly accredited with another university overseas,’ said Professor Budge.
‘This degree is unique in that it provides a student with the opportunity to complete the second year of the course in the other country and to receive a degree from each university.’
This arrangement is also a first for any university in Sri Lanka for any course.
Through a joint professional qualification arrangement students will also have their course accredited by the relevant professional planning institutes in both countries.
La Trobe University’s Bendigo campus this week welcomed Professor P K S Mahanama, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Moratuwa in Sri Lanka who is visiting to finalise arrangements for the new degree, which the two universities have arranged jointly to commence in 2012.
‘The University of Moratuwa is Sri Lanka’s only specialist university for planning programs and we are delighted to have formed this link with La Trobe University,’ said Professor Mahanama.
‘The course will open doors for students in both countries to expand their experiences’, he added.
Professor Mahanama is the guest of La Trobe and he will be travelling with La Trobe staff to speak at the World Planning Schools Congress to be held next week in Perth, where Professor Budge is also a speaker.
What? Professors Mahanama and Budge will meet with Bendigo Campus Executive Director, Andrew Skewes
