Accounting students get taste of work

20 Jan 2011

Three La Trobe University students have been awarded inaugural accounting internships with Bendigo firm RSD Chartered Accountants.

AccountingKelcy Harrison, Joel Keighran and Sean Tomlinson are undertaking paid employment with RSD Chartered Accountants for the duration of the summer break. They will also complete an academic project for the company.

The internships provide students with practical experience in the workplace and will be credited towards their degree.

The internships are a collaborative venture between RSD Chartered Accountants and the University’s Regional School of Business in Bendigo. They are open to accounting students at the Bendigo campus who have completed the second year of their studies.

‘RSD Chartered Accountants have been very supportive in taking this project from idea to reality,’ said Work Integrated Learning Regional Coordinator, Tracy Quick.

‘They recognise the benefits for the local community of helping to produce work ready graduates.’

Ms Quick is hopeful that this project will be the first of many that will eventually see every student of the Faculty of Law and Management given the opportunity to undertake some kind of work integrated learning as part of their degree studies.

‘Work integrated learning is a win-win situation for all concerned. Students gain valuable experience and local businesses are able to contribute to the development of their professions and reap the rewards of having access to work ready graduates,’ Ms Quick said.

RSD Chartered Accountants Manager, Cara Hall, will supervise the students in their work environment, while lecturers Kate Ashman and Desiree Cullen will supervise the academic activities the students will undertake as part of their internship.

‘RSD Chartered Accountants has been working with the university to support our local students for many years.  This is a further extension of our commitment to our community, providing local students the opportunity to gain valuable experience in a professional work environment,’ said Ms. Hall.
