2011 Bendigo Careers Expo
La Trobe University and key organisations in Bendigo are collaborating to assist students to maximise their chances of securing a position when they graduate.
Strategem Financial Group CEO, David Richardson, and Stephen Marshall from Bendigo Bank will speak to La Trobe students about key skills and attributes that employers seek in addition to their degree.
Strategem and Bendigo Bank are two of 21 organisations that will be represented at La Trobe’s Careers Expo, which aims to help students build their employability skills and promote the prospects of working in Bendigo and north central Victoria.
‘As competition within the graduate job market continues to increase, students need to use every avenue to maximise their chances of securing a graduate position’ said La Trobe University careers consultant, Cris Stanway.
‘There is an abundance of information at the expo that will help them to make more informed decisions about their future career. In particular, students will learn about the specific skills and attributes that employers are seeking and how they can develop these skills during their studies in order to make themselves stand out from the crowd,’ Ms Stanway said.
‘The Careers Expo provides a unique opportunity for students to meet potential employers face to face and market themselves to their chosen industry’ said Ms Stanway.
LTUB student, Fiona Kilgower is looking forward to the expo. ‘I am investigating the possibility of finding a career in the field I love - writing, particularly fiction - so that then my job won't feel like a job,’ said Ms Kilgower.
MGR Accountants representative, Anthony Cappy says ‘Sadly, graduates often leave Bendigo unaware of the high-quality employment opportunities available locally. Many of our current employees are La Trobe alumni and by supporting the Careers Expo we support all La Trobe graduates, the University and regional Victoria.”
Strategem Financial Group recognises the benefit of being involved in the careers expo. ‘By supporting the La Trobe University Careers Expo, Strategem gains access and networking to the most outstanding and motivated Accounting graduates” said Strategem CEO, David Richardson.
Employment agencies will attend the expo to offer a Resume Blitz, giving students the opportunity to have their resumes checked by recruitment professionals.
‘The Bendigo team at Drake international are thrilled to be a part of such a significant event, supporting our local graduates as they take their important next steps in their chosen fields’ said Drake consultant, Cassandra Flanigan.
Ms Flanigan said there are some great job opportunities and she encourages graduates who are seeking permanent and/or temporary employment to register their details with her organisation.
Coliban Water General Manager Organisational Development Mr Andrew Cooney said there are benefits for his organisation in attending the expo.
‘The Careers Expo provides us with a fantastic opportunity to promote the exciting career opportunities that exist within the water industry and our region. There are a range of careers with Coliban Water for students to explore - from Engineers, Accounting, Economics and Law, giving students the opportunity to work in a large organisation, locally’ he said.
