Students deliver winning ideas for Loddon Shire tourism
A marketing strategy developed by La Trobe University tourism and hospitality students has been hailed a winner by the Loddon Shire Council
Loddon Shire Council tourism manager, Ms Robyn Vella said the students’ presentations were impressive and a significant proportion of their suggestions will be incorporated into the council’s 2011 – 2014 tourism plan.
‘This is the first time that Loddon Shire Council and La Trobe University have joined forces in this mutually beneficial project,’ Ms Vella said.
‘I wanted to have students come and look at the shire to see how it can be further developed and they did an excellent job.’
Ms Vella said that all participating student groups had elements in their presentations that will be used by the Loddon Shire Council.
‘All students will receive a certificate of appreciation for the great work that they did in providing some terrific ideas that the council can incorporate into their marketing strategy.
‘The winning presentation demonstrated a sound knowledge of the Loddon Shire tourism region. The SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis showed that the students had really studied the area and had a very good understanding of the region,’ Ms Vella said.
‘All elements of the students’ presentation, dress code and speech were exceptional,’ she said.
La Trobe University tourism and hospitality lecturer, Dr Ivy Chow, said the project had been valuable for the students.
‘The collaborative venture between the Regional School of Business at La Trobe University and the Loddon Shire Council gives our students the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of rural tourism and this is an integral part of their degree.’
‘This project allowed our students to gain practical experience and to get a taste of what will be expected of them in the workplace,’ Dr Chow said.
‘I congratulate the winning groups on their outstanding presentation and acknowledge the tremendous work of all seven groups of students who participated,’ said Dr Chow.
