Student publication wins national award
UniNews, the double page spread in each Wednesday’s edition of the Bendigo Advertiser, has won the ACUMA award for ‘Best Community Outreach Program’ at the ACUMA annual conference held in Perth last week.
The ACUMA awards recognise the efforts of student organisations across the country for their publications, promotional material, facilities, services and programs across a number of award categories.
ACUMA Incorporated is the peak association representing higher education campus service providers in Australia and New Zealand.
In 2009, ACUMA members covered some 80% of Universities Australia members, providing services and facilities for the use of 89% of Australian university students.
UniNews is a collaboration between the Bendigo Student Association (BSA), La Trobe University (LTU) and the Bendigo Advertiser newspaper.
The project commenced in Semester 2, 2004 with the joint intention of building the profile of LTU within the Bendigo and Central Victoria circulation area of the Bendigo Advertiser, and of reinforcing the value of newspapers to the 17- 24yr demographic.
Since its humble beginnings, UniNews has involved LTU students as editors, proof readers, layout artists, photographers, reporters, and short story writers as well as subject material for publication.
UniNews coordinator Brad Russell believes the opportunities that come from the program are enormous, “Students that get involved learn some great skills and appreciate the validity of UniNews as something real rather than simply a theoretical exercise” he said. “At the same time, the readers get a taste of what happens on campus – it demystifies university to some extent and excites people about the possibility of being part of it in the future.”
Collaboration has been the key to the publication’s success with the Graphic Design department playing a major role in production and layout while Residential Services provides a regular ‘Ressie Rave’ article about life on Res. The BSA has provided the coordination role.
