ustralian artist David Burrows has returned after five years in France to engage with Australian audiences through his latest exhibition, ‘Points of Departure.’ He is the first Australian to complete the Masters program at the renowned contemporary art institute, Le Fresnoy National Studio in France.

General exhibition pictureThe exhibition incorporates ideas of distortion and change through sculptural light elements, and is showing at La Trobe University’s Visual Arts Centre in Bendigo until 28 March.

During his time abroad he worked with revolutionary film maker Chantal Akerman and world famous sound artist, Ryoli Ikeda.

‘While in Europe, I was able to stumble across the footprints of giants,’ David says.
‘Points of Departure’ involves two main works, Light of Other Days and Lucent [4] and a number of drawings, with each work emphasising filtered audio and visual elements.
Light of Other Days, developed during his residency program at the VAC, projects unexceptional moments of the artist’s life through cookie jars, to highlight the distorted effects of memory and perception, while Lucent [4] plays with the idea of light as a sculptural form, using smoke and mirrors to create beauty from audio and visual pollutants.

‘Contemporary art can be alienating, but I like to have a democratic approach to my art and leave space for the imagination,’ David says.

David is the current artist in residence at the Visual Arts Centre in Bendigo and will share his European experiences and mesmerising and poignant work with regional visual arts students through a series of lectures and workshops.
This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australian Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body. David’s VAC residency and exhibition is sponsored by The Besen Family Foundation.
