New anatomy lab in Bendigo

La Trobe University is set to expand its teaching and research in health sciences withthe opening of an anatomy facility at the university’s Bendigo campus.

Stethescope The $700,000 world-class laboratory includes areas for teaching, storage and dissection
work on cadavers.

La Trobe’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, Regional, Professor Hal Swerissen said the laboratory willbe a major benefit for regional health sciences students and staff.

‘Anatomy is an essential component of teaching in health sciences and having the laboratory in Bendigo means that our regional students no longer have to travel to
Melbourne to complete this component of the degree,’ Professor Swerissen said.

Degrees such as speech pathology, occupational therapy and podiatry that have anatomy as a core subject will now be able to be completed in Bendigo.

Until now, the lack of an anatomy laboratory in Bendigo has meant that dental students
have been regularly transported to Melbourne for parts of their course, and physiotherapy
students were only able to complete Years 3 and 4 in Bendigo.

‘The anatomy laboratory makes a significance difference to our capacity to deliver entire
programs in regional Victoria,’ said Professor Swerissen.

‘We anticipate that this facility will be a great draw card for attracting academic staff and
future research students,’ he added.

The anatomy laboratory was developed with the support of a Federal Government
Education Investment Fund grant. It will be officially opened on Friday 9 April by Steve
Gibbons MP, Federal Member for Bendigo.

Architects for the project were Toon Architects Group and the building firm was Morey and Hurford, both local companies with excellent reputations.

The anatomy facility builds on the already established strengths of the La Trobe Rural Health School currently being set up at the Bendigo campus, and the La Trobe Institute of Molecular Science in Melbourne.
