La Trobe University Librarian, Professor Ainslie Dewe, has been appointed head of the internationally renowned International Association of Scientific and Technological University Libraries (IATUL).

Ainslie DeweEstablished in 1955, IATUL is an international forum for the exchange of ideas relevant to university libraries of institutions which offer masters or doctoral degrees in engineering, science or technology.

Professor Dewe was elected by the IATUL Board to the role of President in November for a two year term commencing January 2010. Professor Dewe is the second IATUL President from Australia and only the third outside of Europe, in the organisation’s 55 year history. Professor Dewe succeeds Ms Maria Heijne, University Librarian, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands (2007 - 2009).

Professor Dewe said being a board member and president of IATUL will enhance her role at La Trobe.

‘I’ll have access to innovativion and knowledge from similar universities from all over the world, and this will benefit La Trobe in a variety of ways,’ said Professor Dewe.

Professor Dewe was appointed at the November IATUL board meeting and seminar held in Hong Kong. In addition to Board members from Europe, Canada and Australia, the seminar attracted delegates from Brunei, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

As IATUL President, one of Professor Dewe’s priorities is to continue to deepen  connections with university libraries in Asia that have a strong science and technology focus as well as increasing collaborative opportunities with existing members from more than fifty countries.

‘Collaborating with other universities is important as we move from print-based libraries into the digital realm.  By joining forces we can learn and teach one another how to move forward into the digital age,’ she said.

Twenty one Australian libraries and 7 New Zealand libraries currently belong to IATUL.
