A financial economist noted for heading an award-winning cross-disciplinary entrepreneurship education program in the UK has been appointed Dean of La Trobe University’s Faculty of Law and Management.

leigh-drakeHe is Professor Leigh Drake, currently Dean of Nottingham University Business School, a specialist in economics, banking and finance.

Professor Drake’s research interests include: monetary economics and monetary policy;  the efficiency, performance and governance of financial institutions, including banks, insurance companies and the housing and mortgage market; risk analysis and  management, and capital adequacy.

He also has wide practical experience in business policy sectors, having served in advisory and consultancy roles for the UK Government, including the Treasury and the Home Office, the World Bank, and Britain’s Building Societies Association.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Johnson said Professor Drake was an ideal choice to help expand the University’s links with the business community. The Faculty was now going through a period of exciting growth with the appointment of 35 new academic staff.

‘We are extremely pleased to welcome Leigh Drake, a man of great experience, vision and ability, to our University at this time to lead the Faculty into a new era.’

Nottingham University Business School, which Professor Drake has led since 2007, has around 6,000 students (over 2,500 in the UK) and rates highly in the UK for its research excellence and international activities. It delivers business and management education in Malaysia, China and Singapore, and has recently been awarded EQUIS accreditation.

Nottingham won the Times Higher Education Entrepreneurial University of the Year award for 2008/09, and the Business School is also ranked very highly in the areas of social responsibility, sustainability and social entrepreneurship.

Professor Drake said: ‘I’m looking forward to joining La Trobe University, one of Australia’s finest academic institutions, at such an exciting phase in its development. I share La Trobe’s deeply held core values, and am very keen to build on these in my new role.’

An insight into some of Professor Drake’s educational thinking is revealed when he spoke to Britain’s Sunday Times at the time of Nottingham’s entrepreneurial award.

‘We are pioneering entrepreneurship education across all our programs… The key is to link innovations in teaching to our research strengths. Our approach to teaching is new and integrative, using live case-studies and involving local businesses and business mentors. We see ourselves as a knowledge innovation hub.’

This, he says, means looking towards the community in which a university operates, pursuing multi-disciplinary links across the university, and engaging with business locally and beyond.

‘I look forward to working with my new colleagues at La Trobe in these and many other exciting ways, and to utilising my research and managerial experience for the benefit of both the Faculty and the University.’
Professor Drake joined Nottingham Business School in 2003. He was previously

Professor of Monetary Economics at Loughborough University. He takes up his post on La Trobe University’s main Melbourne campus in November.
