La Trobe appoints Australian first

La Trobe University is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Carol Adams in a new position of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Sustainability).

Carol - Head shot An internationally renowned academic in the fields of sustainability reporting, performance management and corporate responsibility, Professor Adams has previously held Head of School Positions at Glasgow, Monash and Deakin University’s. She has served as Deputy Dean and is currently Acting Dean of the Faculty of Law and Management at La Trobe.  

Professor Adams established the La Trobe Institute of Social and Environmental Sustainability and was Chair of La Trobe’s Sustainability Taskforce in 2009. She began her position within the newly created Office for Sustainability in July.

‘Sustainability is a global challenge and La Trobe will seek to develop responsible leaders fit for a resource constrained world, lead by example in our own practices and  expand our knowledge and influence to effect sustainability issues on a national and international level,’ said Professor Adams.   

Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Johnson said Professor Adams would be a driving force in the endeavour of the University to inspire change in the attitudes of the University’s community.

‘La Trobe was established with social responsibility at its core. Professor Adams’ expertise in the area of sustainability and social responsibility will be of immense benefit to the University and its ability to provide a strong voice on these issues,’ he added.

The new role of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Sustainability) is the first  of its kind in Australia and the position highlights the needs of higher education institutions to incorporate sustainable practices into all aspects of University life; operations, curriculum, teaching, learning and policy. Several other positions have been advertised in the Office for Sustainability to achieve this ambition.

“Sustainability and social responsibility are issues that will effect all future generations.  It is our task to embed sustainability into the DNA of La Trobe in order to inspire a behavioural swing towards sustainable practice within the University community,” said Professor Adams.

Professor Adams has also take up the position of Director, La Trobe Institute of Social and Environmental Sustainability to develop multi-disciplinary solutions to pressing problems.
