Bendigo Stadium agreement
An agreement between Bendigo Stadium and La Trobe University has strengthened ties between the two key local organisations.
The agreement provides greater visibility for La Trobe University through signage at major sporting events at the Bendigo Stadium, while members of the Bendigo Braves, Lady Braves and Bendigo Spirit - as well as all junior players and development squads - will have access to personal information and advice about study options at La Trobe University.
Lady Brave and La Trobe University Bachelor of Physical and Health Education student, Sarah Strange applauds the move.
‘I have found it very convenient to be able to combine study and playing basketball at a very high level, while living in Bendigo,’ said Sarah.
Sarah has played basketball for as long as she can remember and says that teaching is her ultimate goal.
‘I definitely want to teach but it’s good to be able to spend so much time playing with the Lady Braves whilst studying.
‘Seven of the Bendigo Spirit players are also members of the Lady Braves and I enjoy being able to play with members of a top basketball league team.
Sarah has a message for members of the Bendigo Stadium.
‘It’s important to not only play sport but to have a career as well. We are very lucky to have the opportunity to enjoy both our sport and higher education in Bendigo.’
Executive Director of La Trobe University’s Bendigo Campus, Andrew Skewes says the agreement between the two organisations is mutually beneficial.
The signage at the stadium will promote Bendigo’s local university to all basketballers, netballers and volleyballers from Bendigo and afar who participate at the stadium - as well as their fans and supporters - to all that attend the great events, conferences and concerts staged by the Bendigo Stadium,’ Mr Skewes said.
‘Many of our current students are keen sportspeople and we want to show our support for the Bendigo Stadium. In return, members of the sporting teams that are based at the stadium will be able to find out anything they want to know about studying at La Trobe through direct access to our Future Students Adviser.’
Ron Stockdale, Bendigo Stadium CEO, says he is delighted that two important local organisations have joined forces in the interests of young people in the region.
‘This agreement brings great benefits to both La Trobe University and Bendigo Stadium. Many of our young members are ardent sports players and, while some of them may go on to professional status when they’re older, having a university qualification will give them an additional career option,’ Mr Stockdale said.
‘What better combination can there be than a healthy body and a healthy mind?’
