Bendigo festival welcomes international students

Bendigo’s multicultural flavour will be enriched with the arrival tomorrow of around 50 international students.

Hannah Nelson from the USFor the first time, this year’s intake of international students at La Trobe University includes students from Iraq, Macau and Nigeria amongst the 25 different countries from around the globe that are represented.

Bendigo campus executive director, Andrew Skewes, says the arrival of the international students offers benefits to La Trobe, the Bendigo community and to the students themselves.

‘Producing global citizens is central to La Trobe University’s mission and we continue to expand the multicultural diversity of our campuses and the communities we serve by increasing our international student numbers,’ Mr Skewes said.

‘The social and cultural fabric of our region will be enriched through the interaction of our international students with fellow students and members of the community.’

Associate director, regional campuses, Victor Rajeevan, says the Bendigo campus has seen a substantial increase in international students this year.
‘The Initial Registration for Overseas Nurses program that we are running for the first time this year attracted 25 international students who started their 13-week course in January,’ said Mr Rajeevan.

‘The International Students Welcome Festival will welcome another 50 students who are enrolled in courses across all faculties this semester,’ Mr Rajeevan said.

The university will host a three-day welcome festival to help familiarise the students with study and life on campus. The festival will include social activities such as a city tour and visit to the Bendigo Art Gallery.

The new students will enjoy a lunch break with staff and fellow students after their welcome session.
