Academic wins award

La Trobe University educationist, Emeritus Professor Gilah Leder has been honoured by the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction for her outstanding achievements in mathematics education, research and development. 

Gilah Leder The former Director of the University’s Institute of Advanced Study, Director of Graduate Studies and Professor in the School of Education was awarded the Commission’s prestigious Felix Klein Medal for 2009.

Professor Leder’s research embraces gender issues and the interaction between teaching, learning and assessment in relation to mathematics from school to university.

In her current research she is tracing the mathematical development of students as they progress through school and the longer-term development and career paths of students identified at school as exceptionally high achievers in mathematics.

Professor Leder's ground-breaking work – which applies perspectives and theories from sociology and psychology as well as those from mathematics – has been published in almost two hundred scholarly publications world-wide.

A Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, Professor Leder is Past President and life member of the Mathematics Research Group of Australasia and of the International group of Psychology of Mathematics Education.  She is also Adjunct Professor of Education at Monash University.
