La Trobe welcomes $950 Training and Learning Bonus for students

VP Paul JohnsonLa Trobe University warmly welcomes the announcement today by the Rudd Government of a $950 Training and Learning Bonus, to be paid to eligible students and people outside of the workforce returning to study to help with the costs of education and training.

'Investing in education is a critical factor in rebuilding the economy,' said Professor Paul Johnson, Vice Chancellor, La Trobe University.

'Study not only helps break the cycle of poverty within families,  the whole of society benefits as graduates contribute more to the economy by paying higher taxes.

'Financial and infrastructure support for higher education helps increase student numbers and encourages participation by disadvantaged groups and by those in regional areas,' he said.

'The Bradley Review made important recommendations on the need to invest more in the higher education sector, and todays announcement is a fantastic first tranche of deep spending for the Education Revolution,' said Professor Johnson referring to the wide investment announced in the nations school libraries and 500 new science laboratories.

'We look forward to more government announcements on urgent investments needed in higher education', said Professor Johnson.
