Role of regional cities explored

The Committee for the Economic Development of Australia is holding a one-day workshop in Bendigo on Wednesday 9 September to explore the contribution Australia’s regional cities provide to our economic development.

Professor John Martin, Director of the Centre for Sustainable Regional Communities at La Trobe University in Bendigo has facilitated this regional CEDA event to recognise the contribution regional cities make toward national prosperity.

‘It is clear Australia’s regional cities are a vital link in our nation building, in their own right as economic engines and in the vital role they play connecting metropolitan and rural communities’ Professor Martin said.

The mayor of the City of Great Bendigo, Councillor Kevin Gibbons, will welcome delegates and the city’s CEO, Mr Craig Niemann will provide a vision for Bendigo in its role of serving central Victoria.

Issues of water, telecommunications and rural finance will then be discussed by industry leaders in these fields, Mr Gavin Hanlon, Coliban Water; Mr Phillip Lazenby, Bendigo Community Telco; and Mr Dugald Graham, Rural Finance Corporation.

Growth management and the future of rural cities will be discussed by Mr John Theodoulou from Parson Brinkerhoff and Mr Phil Ruthven from IBIS World.

The keynote address will be presented by the Hon Jacinta Allan MP, Victorian Minister for Regional and Rural Development, and Minister for Skills and Workforce Participation. Ms Allan is also the member for Bendigo East, with Bendigo being one of the fastest growing rural regions in Australia.

The final session will cover planning, health and housing with presentations from Mr Trevor Budge from La Trobe University, Mr John Mulder from Bendigo Health and Mr Ken Marchingo from Loddon Mallee Housing Services.

Professor Martin recommends this as a must attend event for those regional business leaders making investment decisions for the long term.

‘With the continuing growth rate in the Bendigo region it is essential that business leaders get a good idea of the opportunities and challenges they face in to the future,’ Professor Martin said.

The conference commences at 10 am on Wednesday 9 September at the All Seasons Quality Resort, Bendigo.
