On ya bike! La Trobe University launches new walking and cycling path

23 Apr 2009

On Thursday 23 April, La Trobe University’s Bundoora campus will be launching a new walking and cycling path from Macleod Station.  The launch will coincide with the University’s own ‘Ride to Uni Day’, a day when students and staff are encouraged to travel to university by bicycle rather than by car.

On Thursday 23 April from 8.30am - 10.00am, La Trobe University’s Bundoora campus will be launching a new walking and cycling path from Macleod Station.  The launch will coincide with the University’s own ‘Ride to Uni Day’, a day when students and staff are encouraged to travel to university by bicycle rather than driving their cars.

The $490,000 Walking and Cycling Path has been jointly funded by the Victorian Government, La Trobe University, City of Darebin and City of Banyule and is part of the Victorian Government’s Local Area Access Program. The Mayor of Darebin, Cr. Diana Asmar, the Mayor of Banyule, Cr. Tom Melican and the local State Government member for Bundoora, Colin Brooks will all be in attendance to mark the event.

The path will provide a valuable link between Macleod Station on the Hurstbridge Railway Line and La Trobe University’s Bundoora campus.  In Victoria, bicycles can be carried free of charge on all trains, however on metropolitan services, it is requested that the rear carriage is used.

Professor Carol Adams, the Director of Sustainability at La Trobe says , “Commuting by bike is a time efficient way to build exercise into a daily routine.  The bike path makes this possible for La Trobe University staff and students. It is great to see government, councils and others working with the University to achieve this.”

Activities at the launch will include a free cooked breakfast for cyclists and pedestrians and a 'slow cycle competition' offering great prizes. Just in case anyone needs some bike maintenance on the day there will be a bicycle mechanic on hand.
