Making the connection between students and employers

La Trobe University will connect social work students with clinical and professional educators and potential employers in an expo that benefits both the students and the organisations involved.

The Social Work Field Education and Professional Placement expo provides an opportunity for students to network and discuss opportunities for professional placement with local groups.

Fourth year Bachelor of Social Work student, Jacinta Quin, said her placement last year in the Supported Accommodation Assistant Program with St. Luke’s helped her understand how theory fits into practice.

Ms Quin said she is still considering which field of social work she would like to pursue and placement with different employers helps to decide.

‘My placement has given me the opportunity to get to know some of the workings of non-government organisations. I would now like to experience working in a government organisation.’

‘I am looking forward to the next placement and have more of an idea of what to expect.’

Field Placement Coordinator, Robyn Trainor, said the expo is mutually beneficial for students and regional social work agencies.

‘Participants are able to have a static display at the expo where they can provide information about their agency or organisation to our students.

‘They can talk with students about their services, roles and placement opportunities, which occurs after negotiation and discussion with them and the students,’ Ms Trainor said.

‘Last year’s expo was highly successful. We welcome enquiries from anyone interested in participating in future expos.’

The expo runs from 12 - 2 pm on Friday 27 March. Interested organisations can call 5444 7538 or email
