Local school acknowledged

08 Dec 2008

La Trobe University Alumni Association will today acknowledge the large number of students from Bendigo Senior Secondary College who choose to study locally.

Four hundred and twenty seven BSSC students enrolled at the University over 2005, 2006 and 2007 and 380 of them studied at the Bendigo campus.

Mr Rob Stephenson, Chair of the Bendigo Chapter of the La Trobe University Alumni Association – and a former student at both BSSC and La Trobe’s Bendigo campus – said it was pleasing to see the continuing development of strong ties between the University and local schools.

'It is important that local families are aware of the great opportunities and variety of courses available at La Trobe in Bendigo as affordability of quality higher education is a significant issue in regional areas,'  said Mr Stephenson.

'La Trobe University continues to meet the professional skills requirements of the region, including teachers, nurses, business graduates and pharmacists.'

Mr Stephenson stressed the importance of the new courses on offer at Bendigo.

'Dentistry and law are perfect examples of the service La Trobe University continues to provide to the community. The first cohort of law graduates are now taking up positions in Bendigo, reflecting the view that students who study in regional areas are more likely to work there.'
