La Trobe sports oval's $1.3m revamp
Sports lovers from La Trobe University and the surrounding community will celebrate the re-opening of the University’s main oval this Sunday after the completion of a Federal Government funded $1.3 million revamp.
Director of Student Services, Michael Torney, said he was thrilled by the standard of the upgraded facilities.
“The University received the $1.3 million from the Federal Government’s Voluntary Student Union (VSU) transition fund to make the improvements, and these were vital as the oval had been sadly degraded over the 40 years of its life,” said Mr Torney.
“A number of sporting fixtures had had to be cancelled, but the new oval has state of the art facilities for team sports and the upgraded lighting means night time games and events are now possible,” he added.
A full program of activities this commences at 12 noon, Sunday 29th March, and will include practice sessions and exhibits from all the La Trobe’s field sports clubs including baseball, cricket, hockey, soccer, touch rugby and ultimate Frisbee.
Round robin football games between Menzies, Glenn and Chisholm Colleges are also planned.
The new oval will be officially opened by the Hon. Tony Sheehan, Deputy Chancellor, La Trobe University, at a ceremony beginning at 6pm
