La Trobe fares well in VTAC pop polls

The latest figures from the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre show that student demand for La Trobe University courses has increased since 2008.  In particular, La Trobe is ranked second in the state for its health courses, increasing its market share from 18.0% last year to 19.5% in 2009.

First preferences for the Faculty of Health Sciences have improved markedly, with a threefold increase in first preferences for the Bachelor of Health Sciences since last year. Education has also seen an increase in market share, up from 9.6% last year to 10.5%.

Acting Executive Director of the Bendigo Campus, Dr Andrew Harvey, said he is pleased with the results for the campus.

'La Trobe University's Bendigo campus has seen a 14% increase in preferences 1 - 3 for Commonwealth supported applicants this year compared with 2008. This means that more secondary school graduates are choosing the campus as their first, second or third preference,' Dr Harvey said.

'In Bendigo, the biggest increase in demand is for Health Sciences courses.  Commonwealth supported applications in the first, second or third preference category have risen 24% in Health Sciences courses. There were 1772 applicants this year compared with 1431 in 2008,' said Dr Harvey.

'We have also seen increases of 19% in Humanities and Social Science courses, a 12% increase in Law and Management courses, 5% across Science, Technology and Engineering courses and 5% in Education courses.'

Dr Harvey said first round offers due to be released on Monday, 18 January will give a clearer indication of student numbers for 2009.
