Historic venue for student welcome
Bendigo’s historic town hall will be filled to capacity when the City of Greater Bendigo and La Trobe University join together to welcome up to 969 new students to the city on Monday, 23 February 2009.
La Trobe University’s acting executive director, Bendigo campus, Dr Andrew Harvey, said Bendigo Town Hall is the ideal venue for the event.
‘I can’t think of a better way to introduce new students to our beautiful city than having a civic welcome at the historic Bendigo Town Hall,’ said Dr Harvey.
‘The town hall is the perfect place for such an event and we appreciate the City of Greater Bendigo’s support in making it available to us,” said Dr Harvey.
‘The civic welcome symbolises the close relationship between La Trobe University and the City of Greater Bendigo. We want Bendigo to be known as an education city, and we recognise that most of the 969 students commencing their study in 2009 will end up working in the Bendigo region,’ Dr Harvey said.
City of Greater Bendigo Mayor Cr Kevin Gibbins said the City has again worked closely with the University to mark the start of the University year with a civic welcome.
“This is a great opportunity to welcome the new students to Bendigo and to let them know that they are valued members of our community. We want them to embrace Bendigo and all that it offers. We are keen to let them know that they are important to us and that we hope to see them take full advantage of the time they spend here,” said Cr Gibbins.
The civic welcome kicks off this year’s O Week program, which runs until Thursday 26 March 2009. A range of information sessions, social events and campus tours will give students a taste of life at the campus. (See attached for social events organised by the Bendigo Student Association).
