Former Pro Vice-Chancellor honoured
La Trobe University’s mature age lounge and adjacent deck will be officially opened today and named in honour of Professor Les Kilmartin, former Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Bendigo Campus and Dean of the Faculty at Bendigo.
The University endorsed a proposal initiated by the Bendigo chapter of the La Trobe University Alumni Association at the instigation of foundation member and distinguished alumna, Mrs Penny Davis. Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Johnson, will open Kilmartin Court in recognition of Professor Kilmartin’s service to the University and Bendigo community.
Professor Kilmartin’s long association with La Trobe University began in 1972 when be was appointed as a lecturer in sociology at the Bundoora campus. After a period at Swinburne University, Professor Kilmartin was appointed to the position of PVC and Dean of the then Bendigo Faculty in 1995. Although he resigned in 2003, Professor Kilmartin has retained links with the campus to the present day.
The establishment of new programs such as pharmacy, physiotherapy, rural and regional planning, and law at La Trobe University in Bendigo are a credit to Professor Kilmartin. He also played a key role in establishing the Centre for Sustainable Regional Communities and the Office of Business Development, and was instrumental in developing the pathways articulation agreement with Bendigo Regional Institute of TAFE.
