Careers expo puts health on the agenda
La Trobe’s Rural Health School is putting health on the careers agenda of students at Bendigo Senior Secondary College on Wednesday 26 August.
Staff from the School will be hosting a 40-minute snapshot of health careers at the College for years 11 and 12 students interested in a health career.
Fourteen different careers will be on show, from nursing through to oral health, speech pathology, pharmacy, psychology and paramedics.
Dr Amanda Kenny, Director of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Bendigo, said the expo would be an eye-opener for many of the students.
“Health offers a wealth of career choices and it is not every day that students have the chance to see the breadth of opportunities, meet with academics and health professionals and talk about the future.”
“The new $62.7 million Rural Health School at La Trobe University is expanding its regional course offerings next year and will offer strong choice as part our commitment to plug major health workforce shortages in regional Australia.”
Students will be given the chance to participate in interactive and informative workshops to get a hands-on experience of what it is like to work in allied health and nursing.
Dr Kenny said she hoped that students will go away with a better understanding of the careers and courses available at La Trobe University. “We would like to see them as university students one day,” she said.
BSSC Health Services Pathway Leaders, Mary Nash and Michael Lennon said the expo would be of great interest to many students, particularly those in the Health Services Pathway Community, through which the college offers a range of programs for students interested in health related careers.
The health expo will run from 11.10am to 11.50am on Wednesday 26 August at the Bendigo Senior Secondary College.
