Professor Brian McGaw, an analytical chemist with a distinguished record as Dean of Science and Technology at Deakin University and Dean of Health and Life Sciences at Lincoln University in the United Kingdom, has been appointed Dean, Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering at La Trobe University.
Professor McGaw, whose appointment was accepted by the University Council on Monday (October 5th) will take up his new position on November 30th.
'I am delighted that Brian has decided to join La Trobe at such an exciting moment in the growth of the University', said Professor Paul Johnson, Vice Chancellor of La Trobe.
'Construction of the $230 million Centre for AgriBioscience (AgriBio) at our main Melbourne campus has already begun and the $97 million La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science has also been announced.
'Brian will play a crucial role in guiding the development of these world class research and teaching centres,' said Professor Johnson.
Brian is delighted to be joining La Trobe.
‘I am very much looking forward to meeting my new colleagues and to joining La Trobe at such an exciting time in the University’s development.
‘La Trobe has an international reputation for science research and this has been further enhanced by the $330 million investment by DPI and EIF in the new Centre for AgriBioscience and the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science.
‘The recent announcement about the funding of Future Fellows, where La Trobe achieved one of the highest success rates, was a wonderful result for the University. It is very clear that years ahead will see enormous change in the higher education sector in Australia.
‘I am looking forward to working with colleagues to ensure that La Trobe is known for the quality and relevance of its courses and for our commitment to innovation and flexibility and to improving the student experience,’ said Professor McGaw.

Professor McGaw’s research has involved the application of his expertise in analytical chemistry to a broad range of areas including the biosynthesis of secondary plant metabolites, food and agriculture and groundwater quality and monitoring. His extensive publication record includes over 140 publications in books, refereed journals, conference proceedings and government- and industry-funded reports.
