Andrew Skewes: new Executive Director Bendigo campus

01 Jun 2009

Andrew Skewes has been appointed Executive Director of La Trobe University’s Bendigo Campus.

Bendigo Campus

Raised in north east Victoria, Mr Skewes’ understanding of the region will be of great benefit to the Bendigo campus as he leads it through its most progressive phase yet.

Mr Skewes brings a wealth of experience in policy for economic development, senior management, strategic planning, innovation and community engagement. He is the outgoing Director of Innovation and Technology Policy in the Victorian Government Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development.

Mr Skewes said he was excited about taking the position of Executive Director.

‘La Trobe University Bendigo is one of the important institutions in the region and it supports communities by providing opportunity and leadership’ he said.

‘La Trobe University did exceptionally well to win recent Federal Budget allocations to carry out important development projects at Bendigo and Bundoora. One of my roles will be to leverage and maximise these projects, and to lead the expansion of the campus with good strategy, delivery and community engagement.

‘I also hope to use my position as Bendigo campus Executive Director to maintain an involvement in national and state policy on information and communications technology, skills, higher education and research and development’ said Mr Skewes.

His appointment caps off a very positive twelve months for La Trobe Bendigo, with the opening of  a new dental school, and most recently Federal funds to build a new multimillion dollar Rural Health School.

With plans for more development and an increase in student capacity, the new Executive Director joins La Trobe at a crucial moment in its growth under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Johnson.

‘La Trobe is important to the community of the region.  I grew up in regional Victoria - and one of the best things you can do is gain an education and skills for life.  Universities play a
major role as a community resource and as provider of opportunities for youth and others seeking to improve their skills and knowledge.’

Prior to his position with the Victorian Government, Mr Skewes held senior positions at Telstra, the Commonwealth Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, and the Commonwealth Department of Finance.  He holds qualifications in Science, Education and Commerce.

His position with La Trobe will commence on 6 July.
