Student to assist in overseas project

16 Jan 2008

Annaleise Klein, a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Management and Ecology student, will travel to France for several weeks to provide La Trobe University expertise and assistance to an international research project.

The project is part of a larger European Union funded program of research dealing with the stability of spent nuclear waste in geological settings.

This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will allow Annaleise to test research concepts developed in Australia in specialised laboratories at Grenoble University.

The Australian component of the research is supervised by Dr Ewen Silvester, Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Management and Ecology at the Albury-Wodonga campus of La Trobe University. The focus of this research is to develop a specialised sensor probe that can determine the redox potential (the chemical reactivity) of geological materials.

"The ultimate aim of the research is to develop a sophisticated sensor that could be used to measure the reactivity of soils and sediments in any environment,"stated Dr Silvester.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for Annaleise, as she will be working in the laboratories of Professor Laurent Charlet, an expert in the reactivity of clay mineral in low oxygen conditions. This experience will further develop Annaleise’s already high levels of skills and knowledge in this area of chemistry – and no doubt provide inspiration and motivation for the future."

For further information on the project, contact Dr Ewen Silvester on (02) 6024 9878.

Background information

The redox potential is a measure (in volts) of the affinity of a substance for electrons - its electronegativity - compared with hydrogen as the base (zero). Reduction potential measurement has proven to be useful as an analytical tool in monitoring changes in a system.
