Professor Dennis Altman receives Order of Australia

Professor Dennis Altman, Politics professor and renowned political commentator has become a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the Queen's Birthday honours list.

"On behalf of La Trobe, I am delighted Dennis has received this prestigious award and express my hearty congratulations", said Vice Chancellor of La Trobe University, Professor Paul Johnson.

"Dennis is one of the University's most prominent academics, with an important role on the University Council.

"His long-term contribution to human rights and Gay issues makes his award richly deserved," said Professor Johnson.

In addition to his academic responsibilities, Professor Altman has been involved in numerous Australian and international bodies and served as president of the AIDS Society of Asia and the Pacific for four years until 2005 "I'm very grateful to the people who nominated me," said Professor Altman.

"I'm also grateful to my colleagues at La Trobe, whose forbearance has given me space to do the work for which I'm being acknowledged.
