Pakistan's High Commissioner to shed light on regional security

The High Commissioner for Pakistan, His Excellency Mr Jalil Abbas Jilani, will give a public lecture at La Trobe University called 'Regional Security and Economic Situation: Pakistan's Perspective' on Friday, 22nd of August.

Like all developing nations, countries in the South Asian region face many challenges with both internal and external dimensions. Mr Jilani, will demonstrate how the rising oil and food prices, improper management of agriculture and power sectors in the past few years and growing trade deficit are some of the most serious economic challenges faced by the countries of the region.

Mr Jilani will also argue that the regional peace, stability and economic development of the South Asian region can not be achieved until neighbouring Afghanistan stabilises.

This public lecture will be a unique opportunity for the public to listen to the engaging Mr Jilani. Hailing from Pakistan, he joined the Foreign Service of Pakistan in March 1979 and then served at the Headquarters as Section Officer (1981-1982) and Director (1992-1995). Mr Jilani also served as Deputy Secretary, Prime Minister's Secretariat from 1989 to 1992, and has held various diplomatic assignments in Pakistan Missions abroad including Jeddah, London, Washington and New Delhi.

This presentation has been organised by La Trobe's School of Business in the Department of Economics and Finance, and the La Trobe Institute for India and South Asia (LIISA).

The lecture will be held at the HUED Lecture Theatre in at the Bundoora Campus from 12-1pm, Friday 22 August, 2008.
